The city occupies the northern part of the Yonezawa Basin and the mountainous area of the Yoshino River basin in the southern part of Yamagata Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1967. The hot spring town of Akayu, centered around Akayu Onsen (hydrogen sulfide earth spring, 60°C), and Miyauchi, a valley village, are the developed urban areas. The Ou Main Line (Yamagata Shinkansen) runs through the city, and the Yamagata Railway Flower Nagai Line branches off here. The city is a major producer of high-quality grapes and cherries, and is also prolific in Chinese cabbage. Miyauchi has been producing raw silk for a long time. There are also tourist orchards and a hang glider base, which attract tourists. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 160.52 km2 . 33,658 people (2010). 山形県南部,米沢盆地北部と吉野川流域の山地を占める市。1967年市制。赤湯温泉(含硫化水素土類泉,60℃)を中心とする温泉町の赤湯,渓口集落の宮内に市街が発達。奥羽本線(山形新幹線)が通じ,山形鉄道フラワー長井線が分岐。良質のブドウ,サクランボ大産地で,ハクサイも多産。宮内では古くから生糸を産する。観光果樹園や,ハングライダー基地もあって,観光客を集めている。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。160.52km2。3万3658人(2010)。
