Crested swift

Crested swift

A general term for birds belonging to the order Apodiformes and the family Hemiprocnidae. This family, Hemiprocnidae, includes one genus and four species. Length is 16-33 cm. At first glance, they resemble swifts, but they have a small crest on their forehead. They are found from India to New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Crested swifts are not as specialized for flying as swifts. They live as resident birds in open forests, often perching on trees to rest or wait for flying prey. They feed on small insects and spiders in the air, which they catch while flying or by jumping out of their waiting spots. Their nests are small, bowl-shaped, about 3 cm in diameter, just large enough to fit a single egg, and are made from bark fragments and feathers kneaded with saliva, and are attached to the side of a tree. Males and females take turns laying eggs and raising chicks.
