Nanbanbuki - Nanbanbuki

Japanese: 南蛮吹 - なんばんぶき

This is also called Nanban Shibori. Since ancient times, Japanese copper ore has contained silver, but there was no technology to remove the silver from the copper. During the Muromachi period, copper was Japan's main export, and was accepted as a cheap commodity by China, which had the technology to remove the silver. Around 1591 (Tensho 19), Soga Riemon, the ancestor of the Sumitomo clan, is said to have been told of a method to separate and recover silver from copper by a Nanban person in Sakai, Senshu. This method is described in detail in the Kodo Zuroku, published by the Sumitomo family in around 1804-05 (Bunka 1-2).

南蛮絞りともいう。古来，日本の銅鉱石には銀が含まれていたが，銅から銀を取り除く技術がなかった。室町時代には銅は日本の輸出品のおもなもので，銀を除く技術をもつ中国には格安の品として受け入れられていた。1591年(天正19)ころ，住友氏の祖，蘇我理右衛門が泉州堺で南蛮人より銅から銀を分離回収する方法を伝えられたという。この方法は住友家で1804‐05年(文化1‐2)ころ刊行した《鼓銅図録》に詳しく記されている。
