The capital and largest city of the Northwest Territories, Canada. Population 15,000 (1991). Located on the northwest shore of Great Slave Lake. The name comes from the brass tools used by the Indians living in the area. Gold mines were discovered in 1934 and 1943, and the city developed rapidly. It is 450 km from the Arctic Circle and about 1,000 km from Edmonton, the largest city in the south, and is connected to Edmonton by daily air service. The Northern Heritage Centre attracts tourists.
