...The other vocabularies in this lineage were Delafosse's Comparative Vocabulary of the Languages of the Ivory Coast and Adjacent Countries (1904) and Lord Johnston's Comparative Studies in the Bantu and Semi-Bantu Languages (1919-22), the former containing over 60 languages and dialects, and the latter 366 Bantu languages and 87 Semi-Bantu languages and dialects. In southern Africa, the greatest contribution was made by WHI Bleek. His Comparative Grammar of the Southern African Languages (vol. 1, 1862; vol. 2, 1869, unpublished) popularized the term Bantu (meaning "people"), which became the most widely used term in African studies.
