A mythology centered on Izumo. After being driven out of Takamagahara, Susanoo descended to Izumo, defeated the Yamata no Orochi (Eight-headed Serpent) and ruled the region. His descendant, Okuninushi, continued to manage the land, but before the descent of the heavenly grandson, he retired from government in response to Amaterasu Omikami's command to offer the land to him. The Izumo no Kuni Fudoki does not convey this sentiment very well.

出雲を中心とする神話。高天原(たかまがはら)を追われた素戔嗚(すさのお)尊は出雲に降り，八岐大蛇(やまたのおろち)を退治して同地方を治め，その裔(すえ)大国主神はさらに国土を経営したが，天孫降臨のまえ，その国土を奉れとの天照大神の命に応じて政権を離れて隠退。《出雲国風土記》にはこの趣を伝えることがうすい。
