Karnataka [State] (English spelling)

A state in southern India, spanning the Deccan Plateau and the west coast. Its area is 192,000 km2, with a population of 44.98 million (1991). Its capital is Bangalore. It was established in 1956 as a linguistic state whose official language is Kannada, a Dravidian language, and in 1973 changed its name from Mysore State to its current one. The current name comes from the region's ancient name, Karnadu (meaning "land of black earth"). The topography is divided from west to west into the coastal plain, the Western Ghats, and the Deccan Plateau. The coastal plain is low and narrow, belonging to the humid tropics, and receives more than 3,000 mm of precipitation per year from the southwest monsoon.

インド南部の州。デカン高原と西海岸にまたがる。面積19万2000km2，人口4498万(1991)。州都はバンガロール。ドラビダ語系に属するカンナダ語を公用語とする言語州として1956年に成立し，73年マイソール州を現名に改称。現名はこの地方の古名カルナードゥ(〈黒色土のくに〉の意)に由来。地形は，西から海岸平野，西ガーツ山脈，デカン高原に分かれる。海岸平野は低平かつ狭長で湿潤熱帯に属し，年3000mmを超える降水量が南西モンスーンによってもたらされる。
