Meika Uno

A Confucian scholar in the mid-Edo period. His given name was Tei, his pen name was Shishin, and he was commonly known as Sanpei and Myoga. He was from Yasu in Omi Province (Shiga Prefecture). He was born into a merchant family, but did not take over the family business. Instead, he aspired to become an academic and sought the instruction of Mukai Soshu. He admired the learning of Sorai, but was unable to travel east due to ill health, so he sent his younger brother Shiro to study under him. He first lectured on Sorai's learning in Kyoto, but later had doubts about Sorai's theories and came to boldly criticize them. He never married, never served a feudal lord, and lived a strict life, dying at the age of 48. His grave is at Gokurakuji Temple in Kyoto. 江戸中期の儒者。名は鼎,字は士新,通称三平,明霞と号した。近江国(滋賀県)野洲の人。商家に生まれたが家業を継がず,学問に志して向井滄洲に教えを請う。徂徠の学に憧れるが,病身のため東遊できず,弟の士朗を従学せしむ。京都で最初に徂徠学を講じたが,のちには徂徠の学説に疑問を抱き,徂徠学を果敢に批判するに至る。生涯妻を娶らず,諸侯にも仕官せず,自己に厳格な生活態度を貫き通して48歳で没した。墓は京都極楽寺にある。代表的な著作に『論語考』『左伝考』『明霞先生遺稿』がある。<参考文献>高橋博巳「京の脱徂徠学派宇野明霞」(『日本思想史学』15号)
