Arginine phosphate was discovered in the muscles of crustaceans in the 1920s by muscle biochemists O. Meyerhof and K. Lohmann, and has since been found in the muscles of many invertebrates. As a high-energy phosphate ester, like creatine phosphate in vertebrates, it plays a role in storing and transporting energy in the body. It is a type of phosphagen (high energy bond). Arginine phosphate is widely distributed in flatworms, arthropods, mollusks, echinoderms, and protochordata (except cephalochordates), and it is known that in sea urchins, arginine phosphate plays a major role in the early stages of individual development, and creatine phosphate appears as the development progresses.
