Máramaros (English spelling)

…Before it became part of Romania under the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, it was part of the Kingdom of Hungary or the Principality of Transylvania, and at that time both sides of the Tisza River were called Maramures County (historical Maramures, Máramaros in Hungarian). This region, which is part of the archipelago of the Carpathian Mountains, was not an isolated and closed region, but the lives of the mountain residents still retain strong traces of the past, and it has attracted the attention of ethnologists and others as a rare frontier region in Europe.
