Japanese: 南国[市] - なんこく

A city in central Kochi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1959. It occupies the eastern part of the Kochi Plain, in the lower reaches of the Monobe River. The central town, Gomen, was developed by Tosa clan elder Nonaka Kaneyama during the Edo period, and was a river port on the Funaira River at the time. The name comes from the fact that the residents were exempt from paying taxes. Industrial facilities include agricultural machinery, cutlery, electronics, and liquid crystal factories. Agriculture includes rice, greenhouse horticulture, and bamboo shoot cultivation. Drome and eel farming are also popular. Onagadori (a special natural monument) is a specialty of the city. It is served by the Dosan Line, Tosa Electric Railway, and Kochi Expressway, and is home to Kochi Airport, Kochi University's Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Medicine, and the ruins of Tosa Kokubunji Temple (a historic site). Area: 125.30 ^km2 . Population: 49,472 (2010).

高知県中部の市。1959年市制。高知平野東部，物部川の下流域を占める。中心市街の後免(ごめん)は江戸時代に土佐藩の家老野中兼山が開発した町で，当時は舟入(ふないれ)川の河港。地名は住民の年貢を免じたことに由来。工業では農業機械，打刃物のほか電子，液晶工場が立地する。農業は米作，施設園芸のほかタケノコを栽培。ドロメ，ウナギ養殖も盛ん。オナガドリ（特別天然記念物）を特産。土讃線，土佐電鉄，高知自動車道が通じ，高知空港，高知大学農学部・医学部，土佐国分寺跡（史跡）がある。125.30km²。４万9472人（2010）。
