Side Kyogen

Japanese:
Side Kyogen

(1) A classification name for Noh and Kyogen plays. The set of Kyogen plays that are arranged first when a program is compiled. The name corresponds to the Noh play "Waki-noh". In principle, the shite is a god of fortune such as Ebisu or Daikoku, but this is not necessarily the case. Plays with auspicious and refreshing content, such as those that unfold with the characters of the rich man and Tarokaja, and those that depict peasants paying their taxes, are classified here. There are about 30 current plays, including "Ebisu Daikoku", "God of Fortune", "Mochizake", "Zaiho", and "Suehirogi".

(2) In Edo period kabuki performances, this is a detached kyogen with a very simple content that was performed following Shiki Sanbaso and before the main kyogen. It is a celebratory and ceremonial performance. It was named after its "waki" position in comparison to Sanbaso, and was probably named after Noh and Kyogen. It is thought to have been handed down as a custom from the early kabuki detached kyogen period, when it was performed as the first kyogen following Sanbaso. In Edo, each theater had its own specific waki kyogen. These include "Shuten Doji" and "Horoku Muko" at Nakamura-za, "Seven Lucky Gods" and "Chikubushima" at Ichimura-za, and "Choja-biraki" at Morita-za. On the other hand, in Kamigata, it is also called Mae Kyogen, and the names of the pieces that have been passed down include "Hana Nusubito," "Horokuwari," and "Jizo Festival." It seems to have been a simple silent drama, almost like Mibu Kyogen.
