German playwright. Born in Silesia (now Silesia). He was drafted during World War II in the middle of his studies, and after being demobilized he became a doctor and worked in a hospital in the former East Berlin. He established himself as a playwright with "Shakespeare Urgently Needed" (1952), which satirized the cultural bureaucracy of East Germany. He then left East Germany and moved to Munich, where he wrote "Mr. Smeal's Chair" (1961) and "The General's Dog" (1962), before achieving international success with "The Oppenheimer Affair" (1964), which warned of the danger of science being misused for political purposes. His other works include "Joel Brandt" (1965), "The Night the Head of State Was Killed" and "Eichmann".
