In Roman mythology, she was the goddess of the hearth. She was identified with the Greek Hestia. Vesta was worshipped in a circular shrine, but she had no statue, and her eternal fire was the object of worship. She was worshipped in the home and was considered the goddess of the national hearth, and in her temple the fire was constantly kept burning by virgin priestesses called Vestalis. This priesthood was established by King Numa in honor of Rhea Silvia, mother of Romulus and a Vestal Virgin. Vesta is one of the oldest lineages of Roman gods. She is also of the same origin as the Greek Hestia in terms of etymology and rituals, and was the object of worship even before the separation of Greek and Latin.
