Silver jellyfish - Silver jellyfish

A marine animal belonging to the phylum Coelenterata, class Hydrozoa, order Tubule jellyfish, family Porroleidae. Numerous zooids hang down from the underside of a disk-shaped floating part that reaches a diameter of about 4 cm, forming a colony. There is one large trophozoite in the center of the underside of the disk, which is surrounded by numerous microtrophozoites, and several jellyfish-like gametes develop on these microtrophozoites. There are also small and large tentacle-like sensilla around the microtrophozoites, which have short branches equipped with nematocysts. Touching them causes considerable pain. The sensilla and the outer edge of the disk are a beautiful indigo blue color. It is widely distributed in temperate to subtropical seas around the world, and is not uncommon along the Pacific coast of Japan south of central Honshu.

腔腸(こうちょう)動物門ヒドロ虫綱管(くだ)クラゲ目ギンカクラゲ科に属する海産動物。直径4センチメートルほどに達する円盤状の浮きの部分の下面に、多数の個虫が垂れ下がって群体をつくっている。盤の下面中央に大きな1個の栄養体があり、これの周囲を多数の小栄養体が取り巻いているが、これら小栄養体の上には数個のクラゲ様の生殖体が生ずる。また、小栄養体の周りには大小の触手状の感触体がみられ、それには刺胞(しほう)を備えた短い枝がある。これに触れるとかなりの痛みを感ずる。感触体と盤部の外縁は美しい藍青(らんせい)色を呈する。世界の温帯から亜熱帯の海に広く分布し、日本の本州中部以南の太平洋沿岸でもまれではない。
