1747‐93 French royal and politician. The fifth generation of the House of Orléans, which began as the younger brother of Louis XIV, his real name was Louis Philippe Joseph, duc d'Orléans, but during the French Revolution, he took the name Égalité, meaning "equality," to show that he was a supporter of the revolution, despite being a member of the royal family. Even before the revolution, he had taken a rebellious attitude toward the king, and in 1789, as a member of the aristocracy of the Three Estates General, he attempted to unite with the Third Estate members and allied with Mirabeau and others in an attempt to gain power.
