French royal and politician. The fifth generation of the House of Orléans, which began as the younger brother of Louis XIV, his real name was Louis Philippe Joseph, duc d'Orléans, but during the French Revolution, he took the name Égalité, meaning "equality," to show that he was a supporter of the revolution, despite being a member of the royal family. Even before the revolution, he had taken a rebellious attitude toward the king, and in 1789, as a member of the aristocracy of the Three Estates General, he attempted to unite with the Third Estate members and allied with Mirabeau and others in an attempt to gain power.

フランスの王族で政治家。ルイ14世の弟に始まるオルレアン家の5代目で，本名はオルレアン公ルイ･フィリップ･ジョゼフLouis Philippe Joseph,duc d’Orléansであるが，フランス革命中に，王族であるにもかかわらず革命の支持者であることを示すために，みずから〈平等〉を意味するエガリテと名のった。革命前から国王に反抗的な態度をとり，1789年には全国三部会の貴族身分の議員として第三身分の議員との合同をはかり，ミラボーなどと結んで権力をうかがった。
