French painter. Born and died in Paris. His father and uncle were painters, and his talent was recognized early on by Louis XIV, who produced the print "Life of Marie de' Medici" (1700-1710), and in 1718 he became a member of the Academie. His talent for portrait painting in particular earned him the favor of the Orléans family and then the court of Louis XV, and he left behind many portraits of royal families, including "Madame Henriette Dressed as Flora" (1742) and "Portrait of Marie Leszczynska" (1748, both at the Palace of Versailles). He often painted women in mythical costumes, and his works, which combine splendor, elegance, and a touch of melancholy, are typical of the Rococo and classical tastes of the Louis XV era.
