An evergreen tree of the Barringtaceae family, it is found over a wide area from the east coast of Africa to Southeast Asia and the Pacific region, with its northern limit being Amami Oshima in Japan. It usually grows in low marshes near the coast, marshes behind mangroves, or marshes along inland rivers, often growing in colonies. The leaves are 20-30 cm long, oblong to obovate, with small blunt sawtooths, and grow in clusters at the ends of branches. The twigs are thick and have prominent leaf scars. Inflorescences 50-70 cm long hang down from the leaf axils, producing many flowers. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
