He is the protagonist of humorous and witty tales handed down mainly in Anatolia, but also among the Turks and in the former Ottoman Empire. In Arabic, Persian and Turkish literature, such tales belong to the genre called laṭīfa. There are currently more than 550 humorous and witty tales with Nasreddin Khodja as the protagonist.
