Turkish author. After graduating from the Military Academy, he served in various places as a soldier before retiring and becoming a regular contributor to the magazine Young Pen. He returned to military service during the Balkan Wars, was taken prisoner, and then retired again, working as a high school teacher in Constantinople while continuing his writing career. He promoted the movement to simplify the Turkish language, and his essay A New Language (1911) had a major impact on the next generation. He wrote many short stories, and there is a complete collection of his works in 10 volumes, as well as a play, The Trial of Purity. [Koyama Koichiro]

トルコの作家。陸軍士官学校卒業後，軍人として各地に勤務したのち退役，《若いペン》誌への定期寄稿者となった。バルカン戦争に際し軍務に復帰し捕虜となったのち再び退役，コンスタンティノープルで高校教師をつとめながら創作活動を続けた。トルコ語簡素化運動を推進し，論文《新言語》(1911)は次の世代に大きな影響を及ぼした。短編小説が多く，10巻の全集があるほか，戯曲《純潔の試練》もある。【小山皓一郎】
