Also known as the Shimanaka Incident. Right-wing groups protested against Fukazawa Shichiro's Furyu Mutan, published in the December 1960 issue of Chuokoron, claiming that the work was an insult to the Imperial Family, and put pressure on Chuokoron-Shinsha. In the midst of this, in February 1961, a boy who was a former member of the Great Japan Patriotic Party broke into the home of Shimanaka, the president of Chuokoron-Shinsha, stabbing the maid to death and seriously injuring the president's wife. Chuokoron-Shinsha eventually avoided right-wing attacks by apologizing for publishing Furyu Mutan and for "using it as a starting point to cause a murder and upsetting the public." This murder, along with the stabbing of Socialist Party Chairman Asanuma Inejiro (October 1960), was seen as a sign of the resurgence of right-wing terrorism in the postwar period, and the series of events made journalists more aware of the taboo of speaking about the Emperor. In December 1961, Chuokoron-Shinsha discontinued the publication of and cut up a special issue on the Emperor System in its magazine The Science of Thought, which it was publishing at the time (The Science of Thought Incident).
