…It is located in the center of the Indian plains, at the confluence of the Yamuna and Ganges rivers, and has been the administrative and economic center since the time of the ancient King Ashoka. It is also one of the most sacred places in Hinduism, and was called Prayaga in ancient times. In 1583, a fort was built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar, and the town's name was changed to Ilāhābād, becoming the ruling base for the middle reaches of the Ganges.
