1812‐83 Belgian (Flemish) novelist. Born in Antwerp as the son of the deputy port director. He initially wrote poetry in French, but eventually, driven by his love for his hometown, published works in Flemish. He became a leading figure in Flemish Romanticism with his epic historical novels, such as his debut work The Year of Wonders (1837), which depicts the iconoclasm by the Calvinist people in 1566, The Lion of Flanders (1838), and The Peasants' War (1853), which celebrate the resistance of our forefathers against oppressors and their glory.
