Belgian (Flemish) novelist. Born in Antwerp as the son of the deputy port director. He initially wrote poetry in French, but eventually, driven by his love for his hometown, published works in Flemish. He became a leading figure in Flemish Romanticism with his epic historical novels, such as his debut work The Year of Wonders (1837), which depicts the iconoclasm by the Calvinist people in 1566, The Lion of Flanders (1838), and The Peasants' War (1853), which celebrate the resistance of our forefathers against oppressors and their glory.

ベルギー(フランドル)の小説家。アントワープの港務所次長の息子として同地に生まれる。はじめフランス語で詩を書いたが，やがて郷土への愛情からフランドル語で作品を発表した。1566年のカルバン派民衆による〈聖像破壊〉を描いた処女作《驚異の年》(1837)，《フランドルの獅子》(1838)，《農民戦争》(1853)など，圧政者に対する先人の抵抗とその栄誉をたたえた叙事詩的な歴史小説でフランドル･ロマン主義の第一人者となった。
