Sanyo Shinkansen

To overcome the transportation capacity of the Sanyo Main Line, which had reached its limit during the former Japanese National Railways era, this new line extended the Tokaido Shinkansen to Hakata. It is currently part of JR West (West Japan Railway Company). Construction began in 1967, and the 161km section between Shin-Osaka and Okayama was completed and opened in March 1972. The 393km section between Okayama and Hakata was completed in 1975, and the entire line began operation in March of the same year. In 1997, a new type of train (500 series) was introduced, which has the world's fastest operating speed (300km/h), matching the TGV, and now travels between Tokyo and Hakata in as little as 5 hours and 5 minutes, and between Shin-Osaka and Hakata in 2 hours and 21 minutes. In preparation for high-speed operation, the line is designed with a curve radius of 4000m or more and a gradient of 15‰ or less. The tunnel section between Shin-Osaka and Okayama is 35% of the total length, or about 57 km, and between Okayama and Hakata it is 52%, or about 210 km. There are six tunnels over 8 km long, including the 16.3 km long Rokko Tunnel and the 18.7 km long Shin-Kanmon Tunnel. In 1999, there were a series of accidents involving concrete pieces falling from the Fukuoka Tunnel, the Kitakyushu Tunnel, and viaducts, which raised questions about safety inspections.

旧国鉄時代に限界に達した山陽本線の輸送力打開のため，東海道新幹線を博多まで延長した新線。現在はJR西日本（西日本旅客鉄道［株］）に属する。1967年着工，1972年３月新大阪〜岡山間161kmが完成，開業。1975年岡山〜博多間393kmが完成し，同３月から全線営業を開始した。1997年より，営業速度としてはTGVに並んで世界最高（時速300km）の新型車両（500系）を導入，現在は，東京〜博多間を最短５時間５分，新大阪〜博多間を２時間21分で結んでいる。路線は高速運転に備えて，原則として曲線半径は4000m以上，勾配(こうばい)は15‰以下とした。トンネル部分は新大阪〜岡山では全延長の35％，約57km，岡山〜博多では52％，約210kmに達する。トンネルの中には延長16.3kmの六甲トンネル，18.7kmの新関門トンネルなど，８km以上の長大トンネルが６ヵ所ある。1999年に福岡トンネルをはじめ北九州トンネルや高架橋からコンクリート片が落下する事故が相つぎ，安全性の点検に問題が出された。
