Awaji Puppet Theatre
A folk performing art handed down on Awaji Island in Minami-Awaji City, Hyogo Prefecture. A three-person puppet theater based on Gidayu-bushi. During the Edo period, it flourished under the protection of the Hachisuka clan, and toured around Western Japan, popularizing Joruri culture. In 1976, it was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.
