This refers to currents near the bottom of the ocean. In the past, it was thought that the seawater on the bottom was almost still, but with the development of underwater cameras since the 1940s, many ripple marks (regular undulations, also known as sand ripples, wave marks, or sand) on the seafloor have been observed, which led to the prediction that currents may exist in the deep sea as well. In the mid-1950s, G. Wüst published theoretical calculations that suggested that there should be currents of 10 to 15 cm per second in the deep sea of the Atlantic Ocean, but it took more than a decade for this to be confirmed.
