A city in northwestern Chiba Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1967. It straddles the low marshes on the east bank of the Edogawa River and the Shimousa Plateau. It borders Saitama Prefecture across the Edogawa River. The city center has developed since early modern times as a riverside market for Edogawa river boat traffic and a mirin manufacturing area. The city is served by the Musashino Line, Ryutetsu Line, Tobu Noda Line, and Joban Expressway, and since the 1950s housing complexes have been developed, resulting in significant urbanization. Rice and greenhouse vegetables are cultivated, and tourist farms are popular. The Tsukuba Express opened in 2005. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 35.32 km2 . 163,984 people (2010).

千葉県北西部の市。1967年市制。江戸川東岸の低湿地と下総(しもうさ)台地にまたがる。江戸川をはさんで埼玉県に接する。中心市街は近世以来江戸川舟運の河岸場,みりん製造地として発達。武蔵野線,流鉄,東武野田線,常磐自動車道が通じ,昭和30年代から住宅団地の造成が進み,都市化が著しい。農業は米,施設野菜の栽培が行われるほか,観光農園が人気を集めている。2005年つくばエクスプレスが開業。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。35.32km2。16万3984人(2010)。
