A collection of tales. Edited by the novice monk Shami Gento. Published in the mid-Muromachi period (early 15th century). It is a collection of 360 tales, with 12 volumes in total, each with 30 tales, and tales from India, China, and Japan arranged in order. It is written in a skillful style, mainly using Chinese readings, and is peppered with famous Japanese and Chinese poems and beautiful phrases, and many of the tales are based on earlier collections of tales. Overall, the tales are strongly influenced by Buddhist faith. There are also many stories about the origins of temples and shrines, especially those from the temples and shrines around Kanzaki County, Omi Province (Higashi Omi City, Shiga Prefecture). This gives some insight into the background of the book's creation and its editor, Shami Gento. The structure of the preface was influenced by volume 35 of the Taiheiki, "The Tale of the Night of the Night of Kitano." It is noted as the tentative end of a series of tales that had been produced continuously from ancient times to the Middle Ages. A copy written in hiragana from the early Edo period has also been handed down.
