Cavaleria Rusticana

After Verdi and Wagner, there were no other great Romantic opera composers. In Germany, there was Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, which combined Wagnerian techniques with the world of fairy tales, and in Italy, Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana and Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, which took the life of the lower classes as their subject matter and enhanced it with a vivid sense of reality. However, the success of the verismo (realism) operas by Mascagni and Leoncavallo was only temporary, and it was Puccini, known for La Bohème and Madame Butterfly, who inherited the tradition of bel canto singing that had been cultivated in Italy since the 18th century and built the final peak of lyrical melodic beauty.

In 1988, he won first place in a competition run by the Sonzogno Publishing Company for his one-act opera Cavalleria rusticana, which was based on the life of the Sicilian people.
