...One example is Yoshida Shinto, which gained great influence at the end of the Middle Ages. When Christian missionaries came into contact with the teachings of Yoshida Shinto as a representative of Japanese folk religion, they used the word Xinto to describe the faith of the Japanese people (many medieval Shintoists disliked voiced consonants, and insisted that the two characters of Shinto be pronounced Shinto, not Shindo). This is how the word Shinto became known abroad. However, when Shinto was made the state religion in the Meiji era, Shinto, which was claimed to transcend religion as a state ritual, was called Daikyo, Honkyo, Kodo, Kannagaramichi, etc., and various Shinto sects that were considered to be on the same level as Buddhism and Christianity were called Shinto, so the words to describe Japan's unique folk religion remained diverse, and even among researchers, the words Shinto and Shinto belief were often used. On the other hand, the terms Shinto and Shintoism became common among those studying and introducing Japan in Western countries, and so the word Shinto came into general use among Japanese people in the Showa period as well. It also became common to divide the diverse characteristics of Japan's unique faith into various categories, including ancient Shinto, shrine Shinto, sect Shinto, and folk Shinto.

...The name of a god that appears in Japanese mythology. Naobi means to remove an error and return to a normal state. In one of the books of the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, this god appears after Magatsuhi during Izanagi's purification ritual. The prayer reads, "If there is any sin, Kamunohi and O-naohi should be consulted and asked again" (Mikado Festival Prayer), and "If there is any omission in the matter of the longing for peace, Kamunohi and O-naohi should be consulted and asked again" (Odono Festival Prayer). In the Heian period, this god also became the god of banquets and entertainment.

…日本神話にみえる神の名。ナオビは誤りを無くし正常な状態へ改めること。《古事記》および《日本書紀》の一書で，この神は伊弉諾（いざなき）尊の禊に際し，枉津日（まがつひ）神に続いて出現する。祝詞に〈咎過在らむをば神直備（かむなおび）大直備に見直し聞き直して〉(《御門祭祝詞》)，〈言寿ぎ鎮め奉る事の漏り落ちむ事をば神直日命，大直日命聞き直し見直して〉(《大殿祭祝詞》)とある。また，この神は平安朝に入ると宴会，遊芸の神とされるようになる。…
