...Kaneya Kingoro died of an illness in November 1700 (Genroku 13), but his love affairs were sung in the song and rite of passage "Kaneya Kingoro's Nuts" and the joruri "Namba Yakusha Hyohyo" by Uji Kaga no Jō appeared. Around this time, "Kaneya Kingoro's Nuts" (performed at the Toyotakeza in Osaka in 1703) and "Kaneya Kingoro's Atohi Hinagata" (performed at the Toyotakeza in Osaka in 1705) were created as Gidayū-bushi plays, and there was also the kabuki play "Tokorobai Kaikoi no Nukigaki" (July 1780 at the Kakuza in Osaka). Eventually, the play was moved to Edo and rewritten in various ways, with the content adapted to the Edo era. The play "The Beginning of Nishikie, a Speciality of the Eastern Capital" (performed at the Edo Nakamura Theater in January 1811) was adapted from the Okoma and Saizo story and became the basis for "A Corner of Birds' Eyes." It was also adapted from the Oroku and Gantetsu story ("The Vibrant Purple of Iris", 1814), the Date Sodo story ("The Reverse Pattern of Chrysanthemums, Date Dyed", 1819), and the Sarayashiki story ("The Plate Mansion") It was adapted from and adapted to other stories, such as "Minoriyoshikogane no Kikuzuki" (The Golden Moon, the second "Chikai Musubuki no Tategaku" (The Elegant Plaque of a Pact), 1850) and the story of the murder of Minokichi ("Satsukiame Nureta Nakacho" (A Rainy Season, 1856)), but in each case the characters and events have been so transformed that they no longer retain any resemblance to the original, and the names have merely been borrowed to add color.

…金屋金五郎は1700年(元禄13)11月に病没したが，歌祭文《金屋金五郎額の小さん歌祭文》にその浮名がうたわれ，また宇治加賀掾の浄瑠璃《難波役者評判》などが現れた。これに前後して《金屋金五郎浮名額》(1703年大坂豊竹座上演)，《金屋金五郎後日雛形》(1705年大坂豊竹座上演)が義太夫節として成立，また歌舞伎では《南詠恋抄書（ところばいかいこいのぬきがき）》(1780年7月大坂角座)があり，やがて江戸に移って種々に書き替えられ，内容も江戸化した。《東都名物錦絵始（おえどのめいぶつにしきえのはじまり）》(1811年正月江戸中村座上演)は，お駒･才三の筋と抱き合わせて脚色され，〈鳥目の一角〉の原作となった作品，さらにお六･願哲の筋(《杜若艶色紫（かきつばたいろもえどぞめ）》1814)や伊達騒動の筋(《裏模様菊伊達染（うらもようきくのだてぞめ）》1819)，また皿屋敷の筋(《実成金菊月（みのりよしこがねのきくづき）》二番目の《盟結艶立額（ちかいむすぶうきなのたてがく）》1850)や巳之吉殺しの筋(《梅雨濡仲町（さつきあめぬれたなかちよう）》1856)などに連絡･付会して作劇されたが，いずれも原拠のおもかげをとどめぬまでに人物も事件も変容し，ただ彩りとして人名を仮借したにすぎなくなっている。…
