〘名〙① 令制で、官道に設置された宿場。官人のために駅家(えきか)が人馬を継ぎ立て、宿舎、食料を供した。鎌倉以降衰え、代わって宿(しゅく)が発生した。うまや。うまつぎ。〔令義解(718)〕② 鉄道の停車場。列車を停止させ、旅客、貨物を取り扱う場所。※尋常小学読本(明治三六年)(1903)七「汽車が来る。駅(エキ)の名呼ぶ声。とびらのあく音」[語誌]②について、明治のはじめには、「ステーション(ステンショ)」「停車場(ていしゃば・ていしゃじょう)」が①の旧来の駅と区別して使われたが、しだいに音節数の少ない「駅」が一般的になる。
