1862‐1927 German geographer and climatologist. Born in Jena as the son of glaciologist A. Brückner. Studied natural sciences and geography at the universities of Dorpart, Dresden, and Munich. Worked at the Hamburg Marine Meteorological Observatory, the University of Bern in Switzerland, and the University of Halle in Germany, before becoming a professor at the University of Vienna in 1906, mainly in charge of geology. He studied under A. Penck and together they studied glaciers in the Alps, revealing the existence of four glacial periods. He also founded the glaciological journal Zeitschrift für Gletscherkund.
