Furthermore, in the early 19th century, naturalist Pierre Denys-Montfort determined that the Kraken, a monster that dragged ships into the sea, was in fact a giant octopus, establishing the terrifying image of the Kraken as the "largest ferocious creature on earth." Taking inspiration from this, Hugo depicted an octopus attacking a human in "Les Défenses du Sauve" (1866), and J. Verne and H.G.
