For example, the three major mountain-building movements that have taken place on Earth since the Paleozoic era are called the Caledonian, Variscan (or Hercynian), and Alpine orogenies. If we include the geosynclinal period, they correspond to the middle Cambrian to the end of the Silurian, the middle Devonian to the end of the Permian, and the late Jurassic to the present, respectively, and all of them are about 150 million years old. The term orogeny began to be used in the mid-19th century, when GK Gilbert called the displacement of the earth's crust that creates mountains "orogenic" (1890), and H. Stille later redefined it (1919), and the term has been used to this day. As a result of many studies on orogens, the process and mechanism of mountain-building were elucidated, and in the first half of the 20th century, various theories of so-called orogeny (now often called classical orogeny) were developed.
