Nakatsu [city] - Nakatsu

Japanese: 中津[市] - なかつ
Nakatsu [city] - Nakatsu
A city in the northern part of Oita Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1929. It faces the Suo-Nada Sea and occupies the Yamakuni River basin. The central city area at the mouth of the river is the center of the Nakatsu Plain, and developed as a castle town for the Kuroda, Hosokawa, Ogasawara, and Okudaira clans from the end of the 16th century. Since the mid-Meiji period, industries such as silk reeling, spinning, and lumbering have flourished, and after World War II, large steel, steel plate, and ceramic factories have also moved in. In recent years, industrial concentration has progressed, mainly in advanced technology and automobile-related industries, and industrial shipments have increased. In the surrounding rural areas, in addition to rice, vegetable cultivation such as Chinese cabbage and broccoli is thriving. Seaweed farming and shellfish harvesting are also carried out, taking advantage of the shallow sea. The Nippō Main Line and the Higashi-Kyushu Expressway pass through the city, and Yabakei is located in the middle and upper reaches of the Yamakuni River, and the city is part of the Yaba-Hita-Hiko-san Quasi-National Park. The Nakatsu Castle ruins and Fukuzawa Yukichi's former home and memorial hall are located here. In March 2005, the towns of Hon'yabakei, Yabakei, Yamakuni, and Sanko in Shimoge County were incorporated. The area is 491.53 km2 . The population is 84,312 (2010).
