Foreign terms equivalent to Japanese folktales include Volksmärchen (German), conte populaire (French), folktale (English), and folklore (Chinese). Well-formed folktales with human protagonists are called "honkaku mukashibanashi" in Japan, following the European academic term Eigentliches Märchen (German) and ordinary folktale (English) for folktales with the theme of salvation from magic.
