A general term for insects of the Macromiinae subfamily of the family Scutellaria in the order Odonata. The Japanese Oyamadombo and Koyamadombo (illustration) are large and at first glance look like species of the Acanthidae family. Both have bright yellow stripes on a metallic green background and long legs. They are distributed worldwide except for Australia, but there are not many species. The larvae of the Macromia genus grow in streams, while the larvae of the Epophthalmia genus grow in muddy ponds and marshes. Both species appear between May and August and wander around and fly around waterside areas. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
