A full-length novel by Takahama Kyoshi. It was serialized in the Kokumin Shimbun from February 18 to July 28, 1908 (Meiji 41). It was published by Minyusha in January 1909. Kyoshi's original intention was novels, and in the late 1890s he was more interested in novels than in sketches, but this is his first full-length novel after the publication of his collection of short stories, Keitou (Cocktails) (1908). It is a highly autobiographical coming-of-age novel, entrusted to the protagonist, Hawa Sanzo. It is based on Masaoka Shiki, Naito Meisetsu, Fujino Kohaku, Shinkai Hitou, Iogi Hyoutei, Takemoto Kotosa, and other figures, depicting his high school days in Kyoto when he was passionate about haiku, the haiku poets who came from Tokyo, and his admiration for female Gidayu poets after moving to Tokyo. The original is a 90-chapter version. There is also a revised 78-chapter version that removes the part about his love affair with the female Gidayu poets, but the original is superior.
