An actor who performs kyogen (hon kyogen, ai kyogen, sanbaso and furyu) in a Noh performance. Sometimes used synonymously with kyogen actor, strictly speaking a kyogen actor is a professional who performs kyogen as his main occupation, and even amateurs can become kyogen actors. In the Edo period, the rule was that a particular kyogen actor belonged exclusively to a shite school or family, but nowadays actors from two schools, Okura and Izumi, perform kyogen roles in five shite schools (Kanze, Hosho, Konparu, Kongo and Kita). In early Kabuki, there was a role called the Kyogen-kata, alongside the clown, who was responsible for humorous performances, but later on, lower-ranking Kabuki writers (Kyogen writers) came to be called Kyogen-kata.
