1909‐78 Soviet author. Born to a lawyer in Moscow. At the age of nine, he moved with his family to Samara, but his father died in 1920 and he was raised by his mother, who was a biology lecturer at Samara University. In 1922 he returned to Moscow with his family, graduated from a seven-year school and entered the Bryusov State Literary Institute. In 1932 he was arrested for political reasons and exiled to Alma-Ata (now Almaty), where he worked as a librarian and teacher before joining the Central Museum of Kazakhstan. He began writing in 1939, and published "The Monkey Comes for His Skull" in 1959 and "The Conservator of Antiquities" in 1966. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
