Wolfrahm

In the old days, when tungsten was mixed in with tin ore during metallurgy, it would take away a large amount of tin and turn it into slag, so miners disliked it and called it Wolfrahm (German) because it was a ravenous wolf and the filth it produced. For this reason, tungsten ore (wolframite) was called Wolframit from around the 16th century, and the element came to be called Wolfram in German. …

…ウォルフラムともいう。古くスズ鉱の冶金に際してこれが混在すると，多量のスズを奪いとり鉱滓としてしまうことから，むさぼり食うオオカミ，オオカミの出す不潔物という意味で坑夫がWolfrahm(ドイツ語)と呼んで嫌っていた。このことから16世紀ころからタングステンの鉱石(鉄マンガン重石)をWolframitと呼んだが，これにちなんでこの元素はドイツ語系ではウォルフラムと呼ばれるようになった。…
