Born: March 22, 1768, Northumberland
[Died] February 27, 1858, London. British paper manufacturer. Apprenticed to a paper manufacturer in Kent, during which he improved the papermaking machine invented by Frenchman NL Robert in 1798, and around 1803 completed the first working Fadriline papermaking machine, subsequently producing 191 units. In 1813, in collaboration with a printer, he developed the precursor to the rotary printing press and a typesetting roller; although this machine ultimately failed, the typesetting roller became widely used. After 1815, he became a civil engineer in London, and in 1818, he founded the Institution of Civil Engineers.
