Born: March 18, 1903, Livorno Died: January 11, 1944, Verona. Italian politician and diplomat. After graduating from the University of Rome, he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in 1930 married the daughter of dictator B. Mussolini. He served as foreign minister in the Fascist government from 1936 to 1943. Towards the end of World War II, as Italy's defeat looked likely, he became critical of Mussolini, and in July 1943, at the Fascist Grand Council, he was at the forefront of the anti-Mussolini faction, for which he was executed by firing squad in Verona. After the war, his Diary was published (1946) and attracted much attention. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
