Born in Bun'ei 2. Younger brother of Matano Kagehira, the local lord of Sagami (Kanagawa Prefecture). He studied under Shinkyo, the second head priest of Jishu Yugyo Shonin, and founded Konko-ji Temple in Shichijo, Kyoto in 1666. In Bunpo 3, he succeeded Chitoku as the fourth head priest of Yugyo Shonin. He was in conflict with Shinko (the Taima sect), and founded Shojoko-ji Temple (Yugyo-ji Temple) in Fujisawa, Sagami, and made it the base of the Yugyo sect. He passed away on February 18, 1672, at the age of 63. His pen names were Ari'a and Ta'a. His Buddhist name was also Keiei. His work includes "The Words of the Fourth Shonin."
