Takasaki Line

Japanese: 高崎線 - たかさきせん
Takasaki Line

The name of the East Japan Railway Company (JR East Japan) line that runs from central Saitama to southwest Gunma. The Omiya-Kumagaya-Takasaki section is 74.7 km long. The entire line is double tracked and DC-electrified. It is a main line that runs northwest-southeast along the Nakasendo road through the Kanto Plain. It opened as the first line of the Japanese Railways in 1883-1884 (Meiji 16-17), and was nationalized in 1906 (Meiji 39). After World War II, the area along the line saw rapid urbanization, and it was electrified in 1952 (Showa 27), and it now has many trains as a commuter line. In 1987, following the privatization of the Japanese National Railways (JNR), it became part of JR East Japan. With the start of operation of the Shonan-Shinjuku Line in 2001 (Heisei 13), some trains began direct operation to the Tokaido Line via Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, and Shibuya. In addition, with the opening of the Ueno-Tokyo Line in 2015, many trains that previously only stopped at Ueno began to operate directly on the Tokaido Main Line.
