Tholos (Greek)

Architectural term. Circular tombs and buildings with a circular plan from ancient Greece and Rome. Tholos include Mycenaean and Etruscan vaulted tombs, as well as circular colonnaded buildings built in Greek and Roman times. The tholos at the sacred sites of Epidaurus, Marmaria at Delphi, and Olympia all date to around the 4th century BC. The most famous examples are the so-called Treasury of Atreus at Mycenae (early 13th century BC) and the Pantheon in Rome (built in the 1st century BC, the current building remodeled in the 2nd century AD).
