1667‐1733 Italian mathematician. He was a Jesuit priest by profession, but from 1699 he taught mathematics at the University of Pavia for the rest of his life. He was interested in Euclid's parallel postulate, and wrote Logica demonstrativa (1697) in which he first investigated the essence of its definition. He then developed a system of Euclides ob omni naevo vindicatus (1733) in which he developed the first 26 theorems of Euclid that could be proved without the parallel postulate, as well as a system that arises from assumptions that deny the parallel postulate, thereby attempting to prove the parallel postulate.
