One of the ancient Greek legends. A war in which Greek heroes invaded and conquered Troy. Homer's Iliad and Odyssey are particularly famous, but many epics were written in ancient Greece as historical facts (the "epic cycle"). Most of them have been lost, but their outlines remain. When the three goddesses Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite competed for beauty, the Trojan prince Paris, who acted as judge, chose Aphrodite and, as promised, was given Helen, the most beautiful woman in Greece, and took her back to Troy. Achilles, Odysseus, and other troops, led by Agamemnon, the brother of Menelaus, set out to recapture Helen. Hector and other heroes fought on the Trojan side. For ten years the matter was unresolved and the blood of many heroes was shed, but finally the Trojan Horse strategy, which had hidden a human, worked, and Troy fell, the men were killed and the women enslaved. Since the excavations by Schliemann, an archaeologist who believed in the existence of Troy, many scholars have acknowledged the existence of the historical events that are the core of the legend, and the period is considered to be around the 13th century BC. → Troy → Related topics Ajax | Idomeneus | Eris | Homer | Memnon | Laocon Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
