A general term for birds of the Thraupinae subfamily of the family Buntingidae in the order Passeriformes. Overall length ranges from 9 to 25 cm. This large group includes 236 species, ranging from birds smaller than sparrows to birds the size of starlings. Despite the large number of species, most of them are very similar, and apart from color, there is not much diversity. The beak is short and thick, but relatively slender for the family Buntingidae, indicating a different diet from other subfamilies of the family. Most are heterochromatic, with females being somewhat duller in color.
